The conflict between the founders deepened in 2005 when Saverin’s founder title was taken away after Facebook incorporated as a new company once Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard to work on the business full-time.
This led to an angry falling out between Saverin and Zuckerberg over Saverin’s shrinking ownership stake and role in the company he helped start with his initial investment.
The dispute came to a head in 2009 when Saverin sued Facebook. A settlement was eventually reached where Saverin walked away with 4-5% of Facebook’s value at the time, equating to around $4.6 billion.
While friends at first and co-founders, business decisions about equity and control over Facebook’s direction caused an irreparable rift between Zuckerberg and Saverin.
